Community History/Location
Thailand’s first major city is Sukhothai, which has a long and fascinating history and is filled with many important and beautiful archaeological sites. The conservation of Mueang Kao Sukhothai began in around 1953 when Field Marshal P. Pibulsongkram, Prime Minister and Minister of Culture, came to inspect the city of Sukhothai and found many important places in ruins. This was the starting point for restoring and preserving the ancient city of Sukhothai to become a historic city and the restoration of the city of Sukhothai was appointed in that year. The term ‘Sukhothai Historical Park’ was first used in 1977. By 1991, people were starting to live, and farm the land, with a variety of other career opportunities arising within the town. In addition, tourists, both Thai and foreigners, began to come to study the rich heritage and culture of Sukhothai.
