Community History/Location
The beautiful Lone Island used to be an uninhabited island covered in dense jungle. Around 100 years ago, Islamic people from Satun started to arrive at the island and set up houses. After that, more people started to come and build their own houses on the island. Eventually, a small Muslim community was formed, with around 80% Islam and 20% Buddhist people. Part of the uniqueness of this place is the simplicity of the fisherman’s way of life. There is also a Muslim culture that blends in with the Buddhists and coexists in peace. Yet another good thing that can be found here is ‘Batik’ or ‘BaTe’ which are beautifully painted and definitely recommended as a product that travelers must bring back home. These things are part of the identity of the Rawai Community Enterprise, Lone Island which has integrated a strong sense of community more than any other.
