Community History/Location
In the days when Chaiya district was home to the government of Thailand (directly up to the Ayutthaya period before 1896) King Rama V travelled to Ban Don by boat where he was met by a rain storm. To bypass this, the King used a canal, which was understood by the villagers to be a shortcut. The name of this canal is called “Klong Lud” and most of the villagers who live along the canal are rice farmers. There were some Chinese who sailed along to buy rice on a regular basis. In 1902, it was formed as a district called Lee Led with Khun Lee Led Luttakit (Nak Thadakul) as the first Village Headman. Originally, the villagers worked in the coconut plantations, but then as they started to turn to rice farm, this coconut farming started to disappear. As for fishing in the canal, the villagers did not dare to do so because there were so many crocodiles in the water and they had to use a wooden barrier to protect their shower areas along the canal. Thereafter, some guests started to come along in order to buy the crocodiles, so many of the villagers in the area gathered up and sold all the crocodiles until they became extinct. When there were no crocodiles left in the canal, the villagers eventually were able to turn to fishing, while the rice field became a coconut plantation again. Up until now, the major occupation here still remains as fishing and coconut farming.
